Messer

It’s not often you get a surprise when you dine out in Melbourne. Our dining scene is filled with such high quality restaurants that finding something unique is a bit of a special occasion.

Enter Messer – German for knife. Run by the team from the well known Copper Pot in Seddon, Messer is a modern German restaurant. That’s right, modern German so ditch those ideas of sausage and sauerkraut, it’s time for some great food which is a bit different and done very well. It’s Berlin diner all the way! Peeps this is your chance for a trip to Berlin without the 22 hour flight!

Fresh, unexpected, delicate and complex make up the impressions of this very interesting meal. The only expected item was Currywurst (Germany’s favourite after the pub snack). This currywusrt was of course plated like no other and took me straight back to Berlin. We also enjoyed a smoked trout sandwich, simple and delicious beetroot salad, fried flatbread and one of the best schnitzel’s I’ve had outside of Germany. The hands down star of the show for me was the incredible Käsespätzle which is a kind of a German macaroni and cheese. Messer makes theirs with gruyere. It was so rich and so delicious I can’t wait to return. To top it off was a deconstructed apple pie that was simply divine.

My tip is you simply must try this wonderful Berlin style diner in the heart of Fitzroy. I enjoyed it from start to finish!
