Grain Store

Tucked away on Flinders Lane in the New York end of the city is a gem of a cafe that is sure to be all the rage in Melbourne’s competitive cafe scene, Grain Store.  Run by two experienced restauranteurs Ingo Meissner, the culinary master and Annika Kreusel, the charming front of house manager.  Together they have created a powerhouse cafe that will be the envy of their peers.

The Grain Store has a distinct northern European ambiance and the menu concept is simple, fresh food grown locally prepared with inspiration and flair.  Upon entering you are presented with the deli counter, stacked to the brim with beautiful baguettes stuffed with quality ingredients along side fresh salads and frittatas.   The mouth-watering presentation is only half the story with an a la carte offering that is restaurant quality at cafe prices.  In short the cafe is excellent and to top it off they use Seven Seeds coffee!

My experience started with a poached egg perfectly done served on top of a potato rosti along with beautifully grilled Portobello mushrooms and spinach, served with a chestnut hollandaise.  Next was gnochi with brussel sprouts, spiced pumpkin seeds, root chips all topped with Milawa Tomme cheese.  I also sampled the slow cooked Tasmanian sea trout with potato fondant, leek and red wine glaze.  Dessert was a wicked feijoa cheesecake with home made honeycomb and chocolate mousse.  The quality of the food, the flavour combinations and the presentation were all amazing and such incredibly great value.

If you are getting the picture that the food is special here you are bang on the money.  This place is already pumping and before long a table will be impossible to muster.  My tip is to get in soon and enjoy before the rest of Melbourne beats you to it!

Grain Store is located at 517 Flinders Lane, Melbourne and can be contacted on 03 9972 6993.  They are open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch.  Breakfast and lunch menu items range from $8 to $25 with desserts from $7 to $10.
