Children’s Activities in Melbourne

The Collingwood Children’s Farm

Situated on 16 acres of land, just 4 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, the Children’s Farm is a magic place for children and adults alike.  Open every day of the year from 9 to 5 PM with daily activities and lots of animals – horses, cows, ducks, pigs, chickens – just to name a few.

The Melbourne Museum

Melbourne Museum explores life in Victoria, from our natural environment to our culture and history.

Located in the Carlton Gardens, opposite the historic Royal Exhibition Buildings, the award-winning Melbourne Museum houses a permanent collection in eight galleries, including one just for children.

Highlights include a complete skeleton of a blue whale, the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, a living rainforest, the racehorse Phar Lap and an IMAX theatre on site. Major international exhibitions are presented in the Touring Hall.

A visit to Melbourne Museum offers rich and often surprising insights into life in Victoria.

Adult admission $10, concession and children free (special exhibitions are ticketed separately and are extra)

 Bunjilaka, Aboriginal Cultural Centre at the Melbourne Museum

Bunjilaka is a space for indigenous and non-indigenous people to learn about Victoria’s Koorie (south eastern Aboriginal) people. Presentations include artworks, artifacts, stories and performances.

Open daily 10am – 5pm.  Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Adult admission $10, concession and children free (special exhibitions are ticketed separately and are extra)

Children’s Playground at The Melbourne Museum

Rathdowne Street, Carlton – Right next door to the Melbourne Museum and the Imax theatre in Carlton Gardens.  Street parking is available. There is also a parking station beneath the Museum.

There are 3 play areas at this park as well as a basketball court and plenty of room to move.

While there is some soft-fall on one of these playgrounds the others are covered with bark and some fine gravel in low traffic areas.  From standard swings to slides and cubby-house type areas this park has something for all children.

The three areas could be broken down into toddlers, swings and an adventure playground. The adventure play area even has some buttons on the floor that when stomped on ring series of bells.

The area is not fenced so you’ll need to be mindful of your kids are at all times.  Rathdowne Street and Nicholson Street border this park and both are busy roads so parents must stay alert.

The IMAX Theatre

IMAX is the world’s largest cinema format, with a screen up to eight stories high. Films, from documentaries to latest release movies, can be experienced in 2D or 3D.

Scienceworks & Melbourne Planetarium

Scienceworks makes learning about science and technology a fun, interactive adventure.  Located in Spotswood, five kilometres from the Melbourne Central Business District, the museum presents science and technology in unexpected and involving ways.

Hands-on participation is positively encouraged and visitors can take part in live demonstrations, shows, guided tours and special activities. There is also a programme of changing exhibitions.  Scienceworks is a great place to challenge curious minds and keep active bodies busy.

The Melbourne Planetarium creates hyper-real, digital simulations of outer space in awe-inspiring astronomical shows. Sessions are information-rich and will take visitors to the stars and beyond

The Melbourne Planetarium and Lightning Room shows each incur an additional charges  of $6 Adults, $5 concessions and $4.50 child (3 – 16 years).

Artplay is a specially designed centre where children, primary school groups and families can be creative alongside professional artists and play in an exciting outdoor space.

The Melbourne Zoo

The Weribee Open Range Zoo

Healesville Sanctuary

Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia’s most recognised attractions, showcasing more than 200 species of Australian wildlife, only one hour from Melbourne.  The sanctuary concentrates on breeding programs and the rehabilitation of injured animals.

The sanctuary is the perfect plast to get closer to Australia’s wildlife.  There are a number of up close experiences featuring kangaroos, koalas and dingos.  There is also a wonderful show featuring Australia’s birds of prey.  Check on the progress of animals being cared for at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre.  This is Australian flora and fauna at its best!

 The Melbourne Aquarium

The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens

The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden is a magical place to discover the world of plants. Come and dig, build, imagine, create, hide…come and explore!

The Children’s Garden closes for two months at the end of school holidays in July. 

Plant Craft Cottage at the Royal Botanic Gardens
