St Crispin

Every once in a while the universe aligns and your very high expectation are surpassed, even blown out of the water.  Say hello to St Crispin one of my new favourite restaurants.

My experience at St Crispin was perfect.  To my delight and surprise some old friends from restaurants past were there to greet me and turn my experience into a memorable evening filled with the best wines, food and conversation I have had in a long time.

St Crispin is filled with restaurant professionals from Raul the sommelier to restaurant manager Luke and the kitchen team.  They were all wonderfully engaging.  The entire team clearly love their work and it shows.

The menu is filled will delicious choices and you can choose a 2 course meal for $50, 3 courses for $60 or even opt for the 7 course degustation menu at $120 which was our choice.  The menu reads like a red carpet guest list at the Oscars with wine pairing extraordinaire from the guru of wine Raul Morena Yague.

Our degustation menu and paired wines reads as follows:

1. Celeriac – Seed puree, kale, walnut – Pennyweight Fino Constance
2. Kingfish – Tea cured – watercress – fennel – 2012 S. Gobelsburger Gruner Veltliner, Austria
3. Quail – Cuttlefish – Shiitake – Kombu – 2011 Pheasant’s Tears Kisi, Georgia
4. Crab – apple – Jerusalem artichoke – foie grass – 2011 J.J Prum Riesling Kabinet, Mosel, Germany
5. John Dory – pumpkin – black sesame seed – gnocchi – 2012 Kumeu River Chardonnay Estate, Auckland, NZ
6. Wagyu – gruyere – red cabbage – rye – 2013 Brad Higgins Nero d’Avola, McLaren Vale, SA
7. Parfait – hazelnut – salted caramel – pastry – La Salamandre, Vielle Liqueur de Noisettes, France

The evening was perfection and I can’t recommend the restaurant highly enough.  Perfect for a night out in Melbourne’s hottest new dining strip Smith Street Collingwood.  Don’t forget to head upstairs to Thomas Olive cocktail bar after dinner, it’s one of Melbourne’s newest and best cocktail bars and the martinis are sublime!

St Crispin is located at 300 Smith Street, Collingwood and can be contacted on (03) 9419 2202.  St. Crispin is open on Tuesday to Thursday 6pm till late and Friday to Sunday 12 noon till late.
