If you don’t live in Thornbury you should. Bars, cafes and restaurants are all popping up at an amazing speed. What is more remarkable than the speed is the quality of these new venues. Case in point Northern Git. It makes living in Thornbury that much better.
Northern Git is the invention of Michael Slade (ex head chef at La Luna Bistro) and his partner. The name says it all northern, irreverent and git yourself up here to experience one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure of eating in a quite a while. Casual is the theme but the food is a very serious business.
The menu is diverse featuring modern British fare with many wonderful options. I had the duck to start while my dining companion started on the wrapped prawns. Both dishes were inventive and had beautiful flavour combinations with an artistic presentation. The steaks are clearly the focus and are aged to perfection on premise. I can easily say this was one of the best steaks I have had in Melbourne, easily rivalling the best restaurants charging 2 or even 3 times as much. My friend likes fillet mignon done medium well. Most chefs would snarl at this and butterfly or over cook the meat. Not here, the fillet was done to perfection. It’s not an easy feat to cook such a thick cut of meat to a medium well perfection, yet Michael and his team did it! I also have to rave about the sides. The beans were crisp and flavourful, the iceberg lettuce salad delicious and the mash potatoes were the best I have had anywhere. Oh my goodness, I still dream of those potatoes.
All this with wine on tap which is another piece of ingenuity. We drank a Heathcote Shiraz that you could not fault and the price was very reasonable for the quality of wine.
So Melbourne here it is, if you want one of Melbourne’s best steaks in a fun casual atmosphere at a very reasonable price, move to Thornbury. Ok well make the trek to Thornbury, you will be seeing me here again and again!
I even sent some of my more adventurous guests to the restaurant who came back raving as well. They were world travellers and were unhappy with the high cost of dining out in Melbourne. They did not want to sacrifice on quality though so they jumped at the chance to try something off the beaten tourist path. They were not easy to please, yet came back enamoured with the restaurant, so well done to the team at Northern Git!
