Take an architect looking for a tree change. Instead of moving to the countryside you open a cafe, place a few very cool artistic representations of trees in the cafe and voila, your tree change! Ray has done just that and in the process has created a great little spot tucked in a lane-way that has a simple menu with quality items, great flavour combinations and awesome coffee.
Coffee by the way is clearly Ray’s passion. He starting working in the Mailing Room and De Clieu which has earned him a serious coffee pedigree. Ray sources his coffee from the Mailing Room and Market Lane and the proof is in the taste. If you are a fan of smooth coffee that is complex with several flavour notes this is your place. You will not find the coffee too strong nor the milk too hot, this is simply coffee at its best. If you are a coffee lover you know the barista is a big part of the equation and Ray has got this covered too. Ray works with only one other barista to ensure a consistent cup of coffee.
While at Cheery & Twigs I also sampled the green curry with rice which was a special. Most of the menu is not Asian however some dishes have an Asian influence. In fact wonderful items such as avocado breakfast pudding, green bean porridge, gourmet sandwiches and sweet treats are the main stay of this cafe, nonetheless I love a great green curry and I was not disappointed. Just the right amount of spice, hot enough you knew you were eating a curry but not so hot you could not enjoy. The rice was cooked to perfection and the chicken and vegetables were perfectly done. Lunch followed with a sweet bean dessert soup which was a wonderful treat after the meal and refreshingly different.
Ray made the decision to open 7 days so you can visit for breakfast, lunch or just coffee whenever you like. Drop in, have a coffee, test the waters, you won’t be disappointed. My tip is to have a chat with the team, you will find the service genuine, warm, professional and fun. I have already been back!
