Perfectly positioned in the new and thriving Docklands end of Collins Street Bar Nacional is located in Collins Square, a major development with two office towers already completed and a third under way. The building is architecturally stunning with a grand lobby filled with quality finishes and slick design features. Bar Nacional adds to the complex by creating a space in which to relax and enjoy; a haven in the city.
Bar Nacional is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this booming commercial area and will easily become a destination venue. The restaurant features a number of small Spanish tapas style share dishes, Spanish wines and beers along with some of the best desserts you will find in town. The menu is inventive and inspired and I was thrilled to be able to sample a number of dishes that I would not have normally tried but ended up loving, including the most deliciously savoury blood pudding! Some other stand outs were morcilla watermelon chutney with fennel, charred broccoli croquette, chicken liver parfait grapefruit and vanilla puree and brioche, prawn salad avocado lemon puree saffron and rooftop greens, josper roasted baby flathead smoked eggplant salad greens, wagyu skirt artichoke puree brussels sprouts pickled turnip and shaved chestnuts.
Dessert at Bar National is without a doubt a highlight and was a fitting end to an enjoyable lunch. The doughnuts are the best I have had in Melbourne. They are hand made in a process that takes four hours. The sugar dusted custard filled ones are my favourite and are a must try. I also enjoyed the wildly inventive and incredibly presented baked sweetcorn cream popcorn ice cream toasted maize and brown butter. It was sensational as well as visual treat. If you are looking for a casual place with great food and service and want to try something a little different, this should be top of your list. Be warned the doughnuts sell out early!
